Miramichi facilities

Miramichi’s site is ideal for residents looking for a longitudinal experience in a true community family medicine setting. Our preceptors have won teaching awards and are enthusiastic collaborators in helping to train future family physicians. Miramichi will be the site of most of the training. Hands on experience is provided in one-on-one settings, including procedure clinics for internal medicine, gynecology, surgery, and orthopedics. Residents may spend one month in Saint John for Obstetrics training.Hospitalist and ICU rotations are part of the program. Residents will have the opportunity to participate in clinics for family practice oncology, care of the elderly, palliative care, addictions and mental health, pediatrics, emergency medicine, psychiatry, prison medicine and Indigenous health clinics. There is a fully equipped SIMs lab onsite and training is provided.

The Miramichi Hospital is a 146-bed facility with comprehensive specialty services. Miramichi also has several Nursing Homes, a Hospice Care facility, Special Care homes, and two correctional facilities.

Clinical curriculum

In the Miramichi site, resident training is focused on the College of Family Physicians of Canada Triple-C competency-based curriculum, delivered in a longitudinal integrated format with family medicine being the largest component.

  • Through our medical education coordinator and community engagement staff who were in touch with us 2 months prior to the start of residency.

  • The longitudinal integrated format that is resident –focused, with diverse rural experiences in both the core family medicine and subspecialty rotations.

  • Being in a different service each day is an exciting learning experience as I get to see cases of varying complexities.

  • The small town feel and the people are welcoming. The patients are very appreciative of the care provided to them.

  • We have a very good professional relationship with our preceptors and they accommodate the resident's learning style.

  • Yes, The one-to-one preceptor to resident model allows me to actively participate in patient care with a good balance of responsibility and independence. We also have strong support from surgical staff and have a lot of hands-on experiences in office/minor surgical procedures.

  • Being in a different service each day is an exciting learning experience as I get to see cases of varying complexities.  

  • There is a good work-life balance as the program is focused on resident learning.

  • We have an exceptional support as our Site Administrator and Site Director always touch base with us to asks for our needs and general well being and work around our needs. The staff also hosts get-togethers in their homes for residents and medical students. We also have community engagement activities.
